LogMeIn Becomes Latest Cloud-Based Service to Ditch Free Accounts

Soon LogMeIn Free will no longer be available

Looks like the heat might be off SugarSync for now, as users of LogMeIn's free service discover the rug has pulled out from underneath them with less than a week to go before the company's shift to paid-only.

LogMeIn announced Tuesday that it will be eliminating the free version of its remote access product -- and it's giving users a mere seven days to pay up or get out.

As first noted by Engadget, LogMeIn users began receiving notification of the change via email on Tuesday largely echoing a FAQ page on the company's website. The bottom line, however, appears to be that the free option is gone, and those accounts will only be active for seven days from the first login made after January 21.

"In order to address the evolving needs of our customers, we will be unifying our portfolio of free and premium remote access products into a paid-only offering," the FAQ explains. "We believe this offering to be the best premium desktop, cloud and mobile access experience available in the market today."

While the change doesn't affect the company's Cubby and join.me services, it will affect those who shelled out big bucks for LogMeIn Ignition, the paid iOS and Android versions. Those users will receive "a special offer regarding an account-level subscription of LogMeIn Pro," which will be the only way to continue using the apps.

The move has rightfully angered many LogMeIn users, despite the company attempting to smooth over any ruffled feathers by offering a discounted $49 subscription for two computers for the first year, an offer we saw on our own free account after logging in Tuesday.

Judging from LogMeIn's tersely-worded blog post, the company clearly wants to get rid of the freeloaders as quickly as possible -- another ominous sign "freemium" could soon become a dinosaur, at least for productivity solutions.
